Amos Lee- Dreamland
Label: Dualtone
Producer: Christian Langdon
Seventeen years and eight albums into his career and Amos Lee remains one of American music’s most soul-stirring and unappreciated modern voices. Dreamland, his latest set and first since 2018, finds that voice in exquisite, top form and in command of the same warm, hypnotic performances that have become emblematic of his artistic identity. The opening title track as well as lead single, “Worry No More” will leave you in a delightfully comforting trance, before the sizzling guitar grooves of “How You Run” or the punchier production of “See the Light” snap you out of it. It’s captivating just how versatile Lee is in his ability to naturally glide between hushed folk settings and more commanding blues-pop surroundings, without ever once sacrificing the emotional wallop of his unique voice. This amalgamation reaches both its sonic and emotional peak on the R&B-heavy anthem, “Shoulda Known Better”, where Lee puts his angelic falsetto on full display and results in his smoothest slice of soul to date. Dreamland is your perfect anecdote to the late-winter blues that seem to make the year’s shortest month feel like its longest; it’s beautiful, inspired, and an early dark-horse candidate for one of 2022’s best LPs.
