New Album Review: Post Malone- Twelve Carat Toothache

Post Malone- Twelve Carat Toothache

Label: Republic

Producers: Post Malone, Louis Bell, Andrew Watt, Andrew Bolooki, Brian Lee, Bryvn, Charlie Handsome, Frankie XY, Hector Soundz, Jasper Harris, Omer Fedi, Taurus

On his fourth studio album, we find Post Malone fully embracing his status as one of Hip-Hop’s most prominent names in today’s mainstream pop scene. While he certainly doesn’t abandon his formative Hip-Hop spirit and swagger, this album hosts the least amount of straight-forward rap than any of his previous releases, in favor of a more streamlined urban pop sound. While this will undoubtedly trouble plenty of his long-time followers, Twelve Carat Toothache definitely stands to be a major gateway for less rap-inclined listeners (like yours truly) to truly embrace what all the fuss has been about in regards to this talented noisemaker. You needn’t look any further than the prominent guest list on the record to officially understand the fine stylistic line Malone is deliberately walking here, as Fleet Foxes rubs elbows with acts like Doja Cat, The Weeknd, Roddy Ricch, and Kid Laroi. And guess what? It all comes together in pretty frigging fantastic fashion. Malone is crafting a killer blend of moody sounds throughout this record, fittingly fueled by his own crippling vices and of course, the overall aftermath of the embattled 2020s thus far. Singles “One Right Now”, “Cooped Up” and “I Like You (A Happier Song)” are positively irresistible, but it’s the soul-stirring depth of tracks like the folk-tinged “Lemon Tree” and the gripping Foxes collab, “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol” that are the rewarding highlights that I was absolutely not prepared for. While it will unquestionably emerge as his most polarizing LP to date, Twelve Carat Toothache also stands to be a truly career-shifting record for Post Malone.
